The University of Maine has received a verbal commitment from Eagan forward Will Merchant. The senior captain is the third Minnesotan to commit to Maine this season as teammate Sam Wolfe and St. Thomas defenseman Eric Schurhamer have both agreed to become Black Bears.
Eagan now has four players that have committed to play college hockey at Division I institutions. Besides the two future Black Bears, Michael Zajac will play at Princeton and Eli May has agreed to play at St. Cloud State. These four have bright futures ahead of them but still have plenty of work left in high school as they look to return to the State High School Hockey Tournament and improve on their third place finish from a year ago.
Merchant has been a driving source behind Eagan’s success this season, scoring 22 goals and 20 assists in 23 games, but more importantly it’s his contribution on defense that sets him apart from his peers. Merchant’s USHL rights are held by the Tri-City Storm. It would be expected for Merchant to play a year for Tri-City before starting his college career in the fall of 2013.
